Obeying The Lord
God told the prophet Elijah there would be a drought and told him to get out of Gilead and go to the Brook Cherith. This put Elijah in a position to be TOTALLY dependent on God. Not only did he have to be obedient to survive but he had to step out on faith. God provided food for Elijah through the ravens.
Another look at obedience is with the widow in Zarephath. All she had were enough ingredients to make a cake for her and her son. She was preparing to eat the last of what she had and die. When she met the prophet Elijah at the gate, he asked her to give him bread. She then told him that she only had a small amount. She received instructions from the Lord to give the prophet what she had and that she would be taken care of for the duration of the famine. She obeyed. Her and her son were sustained during the famine and the flour and oil never ran out.
I like to think of being obedient to Lord like looking at a map. The map tells you which way to go and as long as you follow the map, you will get to where you are going on time. However, if you decide that you want to take a “short cut” and go your own way (we have all taken them), you may not arrive at your destination. You will most likely get lost. But as soon as you look at that good ol’ map, you will be able to get right back on track.
