Keeping Your Carpet Clean
Keeping your carpet clean is the foundation of a clean home. By using the right home remedies, you can extend the life of your carpet and area rugs and avoid spending a lot of money on cleaning services and products.
Vacuum
High traffic areas should be vacuumed every other day and the entire carpet vacuumed once a week. This helps to keep the high traffic areas clean while maintaining the carpet’s fluff.
Home Steam Cleaner
Use a home steam cleaner to clean wet spills before they have time to dry and become set-in stains. Steam clean the entire carpet about twice a year. Doing it your self is a lot cheaper than hiring someone to do it for you. You’ll get some exercise and keep a few bucks in your purse. If you don’t own a home steam cleaner, renting one is another good option.
Avoid Costly Carpet Sprays and Deodorizers
- Liquid detergent works good on carpet stains. Mix one teaspoon of detergent with one quart of warm water in a spray bottle for easy application
- When cleaning difficult stains. Gently apply the cleaning solution with a soft brush. Work from the outside to the center and use a clean towel to blot up the moisture. Repeat until the towel comes out clean then rinse with clean warm water and blot dry.
- Baking Soda…Ah good ol’ baking soda. Another use for it? Yes! Sprinkle baking soda on your carpets before vacuuming to neutralize odors. This is better than spending money on the brand name carpet powders that don’t really work.
- For strong odors and pet stains/odors use half and half solution of white vinegar and water. On pet stains, cover the area lightly with aluminum foil until dry to deter pets from resoling the area.
