Finding Rest in God
Today, there is more technology, appliances and convenience. But it seems that our lives are probably more stressful than any other time in history. Our busy schedules and hectic lives can become an enemy to our souls. Throw in extra problems like finances or a serious disease and you have one depleted life.
Fortunately, in the midst of all of life’s drama, you can always find rest in our Savior, Jesus Christ. Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”. First, we must go to Him. We never get anywhere trying to solve our own problems. It could actually make them worse. Now, we have the problem AND the extra stress of trying to figure it out.
In verse 29, Jesus tells us to take His yoke. A yoke s a piece of wood that harnesses a pair of oxen together for labor. Because Jesus died on the cross for us, we can be harnessed with Him when facing the stress of daily life. Verse 30 says “For my yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Not only is He telling us we can come to Him and find rest, He is telling us why we can find rest in Him as well. Taking Jesus’ yoke means we have a bonded relationship with Him. He will help keep our priorities in the right perspective and give our lives eternal purpose.
Getting caught up in life’s drama tends to throw us off track. We often forget the bigger picture as we stop to stress over the little things. Rest is more that just a good nights sleep. Sleeping at night can only help us physically. Yeah, sure, when you wake up in the morning you may feel refreshed for a while. But as soon as life slaps you around a couple of times, you are right back at square one. God’s rest gives rest to our souls.
I think it is so cute when little kids reach their arms up to be picked up. They don’t want to walk, they want you to carry them. God loves for us to reach our arms up to Him. He wants to carry us.
My sister, whatever has got you tired, cast your cares on the Lord. Let’s take a moment from our busy lives to stop and find rest in Him.
