To “Vee” or Not to “Vee”? Tips on Covering Low Cut Tops

Early on, when I began to change my wardrobe to a Godly standard, I noticed that most of the shirts  were very low cut. It seems that world is very set on the whole “If you got it flaunt it” thing. Even the button up blouses are purposely made missing the first or second buttons. So, with the shirt buttoned up all the way, you still have a bunch of cleavage out. I have done some major brain storming and seeking to find what works and what doesn’t. I would like to share some of those tips with you.

Buttons:
  • Sewing extra buttons on the shirts that lack them can be a great way to creatively customize your clothing. You don’t need a lot of skills to do it either. I went to a craft store and bought a bag of random buttons. The store I bought them from sold them according to color. So, I was able to get a bag that had colors in it that I wear the most.
  • Most button up shirts come with extra buttons. Many times these buttons will get lost or thrown out when we pull the tags off. Instead, use the extras in the spots that need to b covered. This way, you won’t even have to bother with finding buttons to match the shirt.

Safety Pins:

  • I have mastered the art of safety pinning a shirt so it doesn’t show cleavage. Ladies, it is good to get a box of these from the dollar store and just keep a few in your purse.
  • Safety pins can not only be used to close the top of your shirt. Sometimes, I find the space between the buttons is a little too wide. When I turn to the side, the inside of my shirt is visible. Safety pins can be used in-between the buttons to close these little gaps.

Tees and Turtlenecks:

  • Plain t-shirts are a good way to cover up and add more color to your outfit. I discovered how useful they were while working at a girls clothing store. I bought a few short sleeved tees in the largest size available. By them being girl’s sizes, they are tighter so they don’t look bulky under my clothing. They are also made smaller around the neck, so I know they will keep me covered.
  • I have also bought tees and cut the sleeves off of them. Many times, the camis are too low in the front. I don’t want to be hot or frumpy looking. So cutting the sleeves is a good way to enjoy the sleeveless feel under my clothing without the bulk.
  • Tees that are too low in the front can be turned around backwards. Yes, I said it, backwards. When you turn them around backwards, you can’t even tell. The tee is under your clothing anyway so only the neckline is showing.
  • For you ladies that don’t mind turtlenecks, invest in sleeveless ones. I live in the south, so it doesn’t get that cold but I still want to be covered. Sleeveless turtlenecks keep me covered and comfortable. But not too hot.

I hope these tips will help you when you are trying to dress modestly. It can be very hard to shop for modest clothing. Before you go shopping, ask God to help you to find clothing that is pleasing to Him. You’ll be surprised at what He’ll help you find. :P
