Following To The Narrow Gate Pt 2 of 2
We are born into sin. Our flesh wants to do it’s own thing and not heed to the Spirit of God. I believe this is one reason why Matthew 7:14 says that the narrow gate is difficult. Another reason is because when we do heed to God’s will, we have to deny ourselves to follow Him. Romans 7:18 says that there is nothing good in the flesh. Phrases like “take up the cross” “forsake all to follow Christ” and “die to self” cause our flesh to feel uneasy. It doesn’t want to yield to God. It wants to yield to itself.
In Luke 13:22-29, Jesus also tells us to seek salvation when it is offered. This reminds me of those infomercials that tell people to “act now” before supplies run out. Jesus says in Luke 13:24 that many will try to enter but it will be too late. Verse 25 says “When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you,’I do not know where you come from.’”. The whole “I’ll believe it when I see it” thing doesn’t work here. By then, it will be too late. Hebrews 3:15 says “While it is said, Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.”
When we hear about salvation, and the opportunity to receive Jesus presents itself, we are to accept whether it is popular or not. I believe the reason Jesus called it the narrow road is because He knew that it is not a cake walk. People often want to take the easy way out of things. One thing is for certain, the final destination of the narrow road is far better than the final destination of the wider road.
