Summer Tips For Comfortable Modest Fashion
If you live in the southern United States like I do, you are experiencing the searing heat that comes this time of the year. It is easy to dress modestly when it is cold, as the weather calls for more layers. But what about modesty when the weather heats up? It can be difficult to shop for appropriate clothing because the world wants us to bear as much skin as possible without being arrested for indecent exposure. Hopefully these fashion tips and ideas can help you let your light shine through modesty this summer.
Skirts and Dresses:
It seems as though skirts get shorter and shorter this time of year. As much as I love long denim skirts, they can sometimes be as hot as wearing jean pants in the summer.
- Instead of denim skirts, try skirts made out of other materials like cotton, poplin and gauze. They are easier to find in longer lengths and tend to be cheaper than denim skirts. These materials are light, breathable and can be found in a wide variety of colors and patterns. I think these skirts are so feminine. Go for lighter colors as they reflect the heat instead of absorbing it. Not only are they breathable and cool, they are flattering on any size and shape.

- Just like the skirts, dresses get shorter this time of year as well. I really like the button up dresses similar to the ones worn during the 50′s. If vintage is not your style, a maxi dress coupled with a short sleeved button up blouse or blazer can be just as stylish.
Tops:
I have found tops to be more difficult to shop for during this time of year. I don’t want to be hot and uncomfortable, but I do want to be modest.
- Short sleeve button up blouses are one option. They go with just about everything in the closet and can be transformed from casual to dressy just by changing the accessories.
- Just like the skirts previously mentioned, look for tops made of poplin, gauze or cotton. The light breathable materials are more comfortable.
- Stock up on thin cotton short sleeved tee shirts to go under shirts with low necklines. (See post titled “To Vee or Not to Vee”)
- Colors are good to keep in mind here too. Lighter colors keep you cool because they reflect the heat.
Pants, Shorts and Capris:
- When it comes to finding pants, look for other materials rather than denim. Although a good pair of jeans can be worn any time of the year, the thing to focus on here is staying cool and comfortable. If you are a true denim fan, a good summer denim blend consists of at least 80% cotton and 20% polyester. This combination gives the look and strength of denim but the feel of other materials.

- Another difficult thing to find is shorts. Well, if modesty is the focus here, we know that shorts are out. Instead, go for Bermudas, capris and pedal pusher with a wide leg. These offer a length that is shorter than pants but still longer than shorts. I think a good length for any of these would be right below the knee. That way, when you sit down, you are not exposing the thigh.
Ladies, shopping for modest clothing doesn’t have to be hard if you know what to look for. Remember to pray and ask God to help you find clothing that is pleasing to Him. Because when it is all said and done, God is the one we want to please anyway.
