Just A Little Bit Part 1 of 2
As Christians, we know that we are to be lights in a world filled with darkness. We want Christ in us to shine so that others will see Him when they look at us. Sometimes, we sin and consider it to be insignificant if it is considered sin at all. I once heard Joyce Meyer talk about how she used to cut multiple coupons out and give one to each member of her family. As you all may know, the coupons usually say “one or two per household”. Her and her family would all get into a different line at the grocery store and pretend they didn’t know one another. This way, they would be able to purchase more than one or two of the item. When sharing this story, she talked about how it is stealing. Many people do this. Sadly, there are believers counted in the many that do it as well.
1 Corinthians 5:6 says “Your glory is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?” This is telling us that even a little sin is still sin. No matter how big we may think it is, God still considered it to be sin. Another example that we may not think about is when someone calls us and we tell the person that answered the phone to tell the caller we aren’t home. This is lying. If the one that answered the phone is a child, what type of example are we setting for them? This may also confuse the child if we scold them for lying.
I have often heard the saying “Living for an audience of one” I never really knew what that meant until I became a believer and God started to deal with me on integrity. My husband defines integrity as “who you are when no one is around”. In essence, when we strive to do the right things, we are doing them to please God and no one else. Just because someone didn’t see us doesn’t mean the “little sins” go unnoticed. In fact, I believe that these are the sins that are most dangerous. We may feel at ease to continue to commit these “little sins” because there is no one there in the flesh to convict us or make us self conscious.
