Taking Refuge In God
Many times when I read the book of Ruth, I only looked at the surface story. The surface story ministers to me in many ways. However, this time when I read it, I looked at the story much deeper; always taking notice of the courage Ruth had. She not only had courage, she took refuge in the Lord.
Ruth was a Moabite, a foreigner. When Ruth’s husband died, she was given the opportunity by her mother-in-law, Naomi to go back to her country and her own people. To get a better picture of what is really going on, let’s look at Ruth 1:15. It says, “Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law.” Not only was Ruth a foreigner, she was the only Moabite there. Ruth’s sister-in-law had made the decision to go back to her people and serve another god.
Believe it or not, this happens today. When the going gets tough, people run back to their old lifestyle and give up on God completely. Ruth 1:16 shows us that Ruth not only made the decision to stay with her mother-in-law, but she made the decision to follow God by saying “Entreat me not to leave you…And your God my God. Following God is the best decision we can make. Even when the storm gets so bad we can’t see the other side, we can take refuge in the fact that the Lord will be our light.
In a post called “God Blesses Because of You”, I talked about how our decision to follow Christ can have a domino affect on those around us. In this situation, because Ruth chose to follow God, Naomi was taken care of as well (Ruth 2:17-18).
When things get tough, we should take refuge in God. Not, run in the other direction. Jesus said that we would have trials and tribulations. So, when things don’t go as we would like, we should run to Him. Let Ruth’s story not only inspire us to have courage to go into the unknown, but to take refuge in the Lord.
“The Lord repay your and a full be given you by the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.” ~Ruth 2:12
