Our Attitudes Toward Money Part 1 of 3

Our Attitudes Toward Money Part 1 of 3

Sometimes, Bible scriptures regarding money can be misunderstood to mean that having money i s wrong. Having money is not wrong. What can be wrong however, is our attitudes toward it. I think there are two tests that we must past concerning money; how we act when have it and how we act when we don’t have it. How we act when we are in one of those situations can also reflect our attitudes towards money. 1 Timothy 6:6-20 gives us some instructions concerning our attitudes with money.

Take some time right now and think about how you act when you don’t have money. Do you remain joyful? Or, do you walk around with an attitude? What do you think about when you don’t have money? Do you walk around constantly trying to figure out how to get some? Or, do you put it in God’s hands and move on? 1 Timothy 6:6 tells us that godliness with contentment is great gain. This is basically saying that whatever you have, if you are thankful for that is great gain. There is nothing wrong with striving to do better but we can’t allow that to overtake our thoughts.

If we walk around concerned with how we can get money all of the time, we can begin to lust after it. Lusting after something is so often associated with sex, but one can lust after anything. When we lust after something it means that we want it so bad that we feel we can’t be happy without it. 1 Timothy 6:9 addresses this type of lust. It says “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.”  When we begin to lust after money, it opens the door for other sins to take place. Verse 10 tells us “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil…” Many people misunderstand this to mean that money is evil. Money is not evil, it is what we do to get it, or how we act concerning it that can be evil. This verse concludes by telling us this. It says,  “…for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows”
