Our Attitudes Towards Money Part 2 of 3
As mentioned yesterday, I believe there are two tests we must pass concerning money; how we act when we have it and how we act when don’t have it. Now, let take a moment to think about how we act when we have money. So often, the first thing we think about is what we can buy with it. Sometimes, our money begins to burn a hole in our pockets before we even get it. A mindset such as this is not good. If we cannot past to test when we have money, God will not bless us with more because we can’t handle having it. 1 Timothy 6:17 addresses the attitudes we should have when we have money. It says “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy” This is basically saying, when we have money, don’t act like you are better than those that don’t have it, and don’t put your trust in it. We should put our trust in God because He is the One that gave us the money to begin with.
In Matthew 19:23, Jesus said that it was hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven. This is also misunderstood when reading the Bible. Jesus wasn’t saying that all rich people can’t go to Heaven. When Jesus told the young ruler to give his stuff to the poor, He wasn’t saying that everyone should do that. I believe the rich young ruler was being tested. Matthew 19:22 says that he went away ad because he had great possessions. So, we know that he didn’t past the test. Just because you are wealthy doesn’t mean you cannot live Godly. There are a couple examples in the Bible that tell us this. In the Old Testament, we learned that Job was very wealthy. He was a godly man. Another example of wealthy and godly people can be found in the women that followed Jesus. The scripture says that they provided for Him from their possessions. Although it doesn’t give their financial status, I don’t think they were poor and able to provide for Jesus.
