The Unpopular Truth Part 1 of 2

The Unpopular Truth Part 1 of 2

We live in a day where people want to be wooed with words. In other words, they want a watered down message, or a “feel good” message. 2 Timothy 4:3-5 talks about this. Verse 3 says “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers” Truth doesn’t always feel good. This scripture is telling us that there are people that will seek out someone to tell them what they want to hear. They will avoid hearing what they need to hear. But, if we seek to do God’s will, we should speak the truth. No matter how unpopular it causes us to be.

When we don’t give the truth straight up, we may take the edge off by using other words for sin, such as “issues” or “slip”. We may avoid messages of deliverance and stick to the ones that don’t sting. Watering down the truth is in essence people pleasing. If we seek to please people, we then put their desires over God’s. 2 Timothy 4:4 says “and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” This is warning us up front that the truth will be unpopular, but the desire to do God’s will should exceed the desire to win the popularity contest.

Jesus said in John 8:32 “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” If the truth is what makes us free, withholding the truth is like withholding the keys to freedom. Thus causing one to remain bound. Others may lead us to believe that just because we share a truth that doesn’t necessarily “feel” good, we are not walking in love. However, if we are walking in love, why would we want anyone to remain bound in sin? Sin brings death and destruction.
