What Part Are You?
Corinthians 12:12 says “For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body being many, are one body, so also is Christ.” Last week, my husband said something to me that was really interesting. He talked about how in the different sports, there are different positions. Each player has a position, knows what it is, and plays their position. Co-relating this to the human body and the body of Christ, he said that we as believers should know what part of the body of Christ that we are to function in.
We know that we are a part of the body of Christ. We know that we believe Jesus died on the cross for our sins. We are secure in the fact that we will spend eternity in heaven. We even know that we as Christians are to spread the gospel and win souls for Christ. However, what we may not know, is exactly what part of the body of Christ are we to function in. I say this because as he was talking to me, I started to think about whether I knew what part of the body I belonged to. At the time, I couldn’t come up with an answer because I didn’t know (I also was hoping he didn’t ask me what part did I feel I belonged to because I was a bit embarrassed to say that I didn’t know).
Romans 12:4-8 also talks about the body of Christ and how each member has a function and a job. Verse 6 says “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them…” When I read this scripture, I thought about how when I was in the world, I used to sing secular music. Now that I am saved, and living for God, I sing music that glorifies Him and spreads the Word of God. See, giving our lives to Christ doesn’t mean that we can just sit back and wait for the rapture or wait to die and go to heaven (which ever comes first). No, we have a job to do. Our job is to preach the gospel to the lost and win souls for Christ. This is why the end of Romans 12:6 says that if the gift is to prophesy then that is what you are to do. Verses 7 and 8 go on to list various gifts of the spirit that we may function in and instruct us to function in those areas.
By the end of the conversation with my husband, I came to the conclusion that my position in the body of Christ is the vocal chords, and part of the hands (yes I also realized that we can be part of more than one area). Because I sing, that makes me a part f the vocal chords. And, because I sew and spread the importance of being modest through fashion, I am a part of the hands.
