Who Are We Really Part 2 of 2

Who Are We Really Part 2 of 2

Jesus not only told us to avoid hypocrisy, He also told us the consequences of living hypocritically. In Luke 12:2  He says that there is nothing covered that will not be revealed and there is nothing hidden that will not be exposed. When I was teenager, my mother used to say “What’s done in the dark, comes out into the light”. This is basically what Jesus was saying. In fact, in verse 3, Jesus says that there is nothing spoken in the dark that will not be shouted on the roof top. When we live a life opposite of  what we proclaim, we often do it in secret. As I mentioned yesterday, it is easy to be Christian when we are at church or around family and friends. But what Jesus is saying here is that whatever we are, will eventually come out. One can only hide for so long. No matter how much we think we are doing things in secret, God sees them.

I believe it takes more effort to live in hypocrisy than it takes to live right.  I say this because it’s like you have to live two lives and be two different people. For years before I became a serious Christian, I lived that double life. I would sing in clubs and party on Friday and Saturday, then, on Sunday I would get up and go to church. Sometimes, I would be so sleepy and it would take so much energy just to get up and get dressed. Then, I would have to find something in my  closet that was “appropriate” for church. The whole service I would be wondering if anyone could smell the alcohol and smoke on me. When I finally gave my life to Christ and began to serve Him totally, it seemed like a weight had been lifted off of me. I no longer had to be two people. I could be one person all of the time and not be ashamed or paranoid.

When we know how we are suppose to live and live another way, we suffer worse consequences than had we not known (see 12:47-48). God would rather us serve Him wholeheartedly or not serve Him at all. If you have found any areas in your life where you have compromised your integrity, ask God to forgive you. Ask Him to remove anything that is not like Him. Let’s live right and represent Christ all of the time.
