Getting To God

Many know the day after Thanksgiving is considered one of the biggest shopping days of the year. It marks the official start of the Christmas shopping season. Last week, on the day after Thanksgiving, I watched the news coverage on the shopping events around the city. Many people lined up and crowded around the doors of the various retail stores and malls. Some even camped out in the parking lots over night to get first dibs on the sale merchandise. I then had to think to myself, as Christians, how eager are we to get to God? Do we have the same enthusiasm in obeying God as we have when it is time to shop the good deals in our favorite retail stores? Do we watch the clock and count the seconds while we are pushing our carts around a store the way we count the seconds with one eye open during our daily prayer time?

An example of eagerness to get to God can be found in John 21:5-8. This situation took place after Jesus had died on the cross and rose from the grave but had not yet ascended to Heaven. The disciples were fishing on the sea of Tiberias. They had been fishing all night but weren’t catching anything. Jesus appeared on the shore and asked them if they had any food. They said no not knowing that it was Jesus talking to them. Jesus told them to let their nets down on the right side of the boat. They couldn’t draw it back into the boat because there were too many fish in the net. Verse 7 says “Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it) and plunged into the sea.”

The excitement that Peter had for Jesus can be compared to the people that couldn’t wait to shop. They just had their excitement and zeal in the wrong things. Being more excited about something than we are about God could even be considered as putting that something before Him. Ladies, let’s make sure we are more excited about the Lord than anything else in this world. Let plunge into the water and swim to Him like never before.
