Not Just During The Holidays
During this time of year, the world encourages us to give to those that are in need. But, has anyone stopped to think that those that are in need are in need at other times of the year besides to holidays? I feel that it is wonderful to want to make the holiday season special for those that are less fortunate. However, after the holidays are gone, those that are in need seem to be forgotten about until next holiday season. The focus is taken off of the less fortunate and shifted onto what to spend the tax returns on. As Christians, we should live an example of a serving and giving heart.
To live as a Christian is to live as Christ lived. Everywhere He went, Jesus served and gave to the people. Not only teaching it but living it as well (Matthew 20:27-28). I thought about this when I read about the lives of the first Christians as described in Acts 4:32-37. Verse 32 talks about how they put all of their possessions together. No one claimed anything as their own because everyone shared everything. Verses 34 and 35 says “Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold and laid them at the apostles’ feet and they distributed to each as anyone had need.” I am by no means saying that we should sell everything that we have and give it away to those in need (unless instructed by God to do so). The focus here is the mind set of these believers. They were totally self-less.
After the holidays are over, the decorations have been taken down, and we go back to business as usual, lets not forget those in need. Let’s make an effort to give to those in need through out the year and not just during the holidays.
