When our spirit is wounded, it may lose the ability to seek, empathize with, and embrace God and others. It may lose vitality to shape the soul with wholesome attitudes and expectations. Mind and heart are part of our soul. They are storehouses of memory, thought and emotion. We act and speak not only from that which fills our mind, but also from that which fills and motivates us from that hidden areas of our hearts (see Luke 6:45; 1 Cor. 4:5).Even a person who is truly striving to learn and perform well can be driven, scattered or emotionally paralyzed because of deep wounds and resultant hidden agendas that often lie beneath the level of consciousness. She may be locked into senses of futility, unworthiness, rejection, and shame when she is unable to make significant changes in her feelings, thoughts, or behavior. A wound or unrepented sin (see Prov. 6:32; Matt. 10:28; 16:26), which continues to sicken or weaken our spirit, seriously impairs the healthy functioning of our soul’s heart and mind. It disturbs and may eventually prevent stable integration and coordinated expression of every part of our body.

Our Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins, but Hebrew 12:5 warns us that we can fall short of His grace if we hold onto roots of bitterness that spring up and cause trouble. Even so, He invites us to pray as the psalmist did: “Search me, O God , and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting (Ps. 139:23, 24). He heals our deep wounds, forgives, and enables us to forgive. He brings our soul out of prison that we may praise Him (see Ps. 142:7a). He finds green pastures for us, lead us beside still waters, and restores our soul s owe can follow Him in paths of righteousness.
