Making the “Race” a “Chase”

Making the “Race” a “Chase”

...Continued

My mother is an avid runner. She ran track in high school and continues to run and exercise to this day. Every year since I can remember, she has ran in a marathon race in our home town of Flint, MI. It’s called “The Crim”. This is a really big event, as people from all different places come to run in this race. 1 Corinthians 9:25 says “And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.” When someone is temperate, they are mild or restrained in behavior or attitude.  My mother doesn’t wait until the day of the race to begin to train. She trains all throughout the summer; running miles everyday. She also watches what she eats and drinks plenty of water, even though she probably would rather pig out and drink pop. This takes incredible discipline and self determination. In other words, she is temperate in her behavior. We should have the same attitude toward the things of God. This is how we pursue righteousness, godliness, patience, faith, love and gentleness. In doing this we are running to obtain an eternal crown.

When we begin to seek God’s kingdom and strive to live a life of holiness, we are pursuing the things of God mentioned in 1 Timothy 6:11. I believe that we will be pursuing these things until we get to Heaven. We don’t run after them for a while and stop. We keep running after them. Ecclesiastes 9:11 tells us that the race isn’t given to the swift or the battle to the strong. Jesus said in Matthew 24:13 that the ones who endure will be saved. Ladies, we have to begin to chase after the things of God if we want to obtain that beautiful, shiny, eternal crown.
