Don’t Get Carried Away Part 3 of 3
Sometimes, we allow our circumstances to dictate how we act as well. An example of this can be found in John 18:10. When the people came to arrest Jesus, Peter allowed the situation to dictate his actions by cutting off the guy’s ear. Peter again allowed circumstances to rule him when he denied knowing Jesus and used bad language (Matthew 26:69-74).
Matthew 26:75 says that after Peter realized what he had done, he went out and “wept bitterly”. I can relate to this. After I have allowed my emotions to overtake me, I feel really bad. I also feel foolish and even drained. Why go through these awful after affects of letting the flesh have control when I can just allow the spirit of the Lord to rule and reign instead?
The first few attempts of not allowing our emotions to control us will be hard. It’s just like exercising a new muscle. It will hurt. But eventually, we will notice that it doesn’t hurt anymore if at all. We will also notice a nice muscle forming where it was once flabby and limp. If we seek God’s help, we can manage our emotions and not let them manage us. Let’s not get carried away by how we feel.
