Another way to play church is to ride the fence. This is when we live partly like a Christian but deliberately live in sin at the same time. There are so many people out there living this way. I know this because I used to live this way. I would hit the club Friday and Saturday nights. I would then go to church Sunday morning – sometimes a bit hung over from the previous nights. I’d attend a couple of revival services and I was even on the praise team. All the while, I was living in sin. Isaiah 29:13 talks about this very thing. It says, “Therefore the Lord said: “ Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men”. I knew better, yet I was blinded by disobedience (see Isaiah 29:9,10).
I was listening to Mary K Baxter’s “Divine Revelation of Hell” the other day. One of the people she and Jesus encountered on her tour of hell was a woman that had lived her life riding the fence. I shuddered at the thought that that could have been me. The woman told them how she had lived a double life. She went to church, knew the “Christian lingo”, and even knew how to act like a Christian. However, she dabbled in sin. Jesus gave her many chances to repent and turn her life around. Yet, she chose a sinful lifestyle over Him…
