Tarnished and Dirty Part 2 of 2
…continued
When I first gave my life to the Lord, I thought that I would be walking on easy street from then on. I had given up a sinful lifestyle and thought that there was no more work to be done on my part. I thought I would have to simply wait for Jesus to return and take me home. Boy, was I wrong! All of the years of sinful living had put dirt and tarnish on my spirit. Slowly, I began to realize that simply believing on the Lord wasn’t going to be enough. I needed a spiritual bath as I reeked with sin. Strongest solution to my problem was God’s word. Just as we realized that we would need a stronger solution to clean the silver, we need something stronger than ourselves to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord. Psalms 119:9 is one of my favorite scriptures. To me, it is one of the keys to true deliverance. It says “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.” If we want a spiritual bath, we simply have to get in God’s word.
I have always heard that God’s word is like a mirror. I never knew what that meant until I began to study and read it for myself. Ladies, we often check the mirror before leaving the house to make sure our hair makeup and clothing is right. When we see something wrong, we fix it. If we don’t look in the mirror, we won’t know that our hair is out of place, or there is lipstick on our teeth
. When we read God’s word, we are able to see what He wants of us and how we do or don’t line up. If we never look in the “mirror” we never know what’s wrong.
Once we see where we do and don’t line up with the Word, we can ask God for His help in cleaning us up. God wants us to live a life that is pleasing to Him. So, we can ask Him for His help in living that life and He will help us. In fact, we can’t do it without Him. We have no choice but to ask Him for His help. I certainly am ok with asking God for His help. With God, all things are possible. God can’t fail and if I seek God’s help, I won’t fail. When we look at the dirt, grime and build up that sin leaves on our spirits, it can be easy to get discouraged. But remember what Psalms 119:9 says. The only way to cleanse our way, is to live according to His word. Continue to seek God’s word and to seek God for a cleansed way. Before you know it, you’ll be shining like polished silver.
