Not Because of What You Do Part 1 of 2
Sometimes, it is easy to get caught up in legalism when striving to live a Godly life. It seems that we are often led to believe that we have to do certain things in order to receive freedom in Christ Jesus. However, I believe that belief in itself is what can keep us bound. We should continually depend solely on Jesus Christ as the source of true freedom, not what we do.
God wants us to live a life filled with integrity, excellence and honesty. He wants us to live a life that reflects the fruit of the Spirit. We can’t produce that fruit on our own. We can only produce the fruit of the Spirit through the One that the Spirit comes from. Ephesians 2:8 says “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. Not of works lest anyone should boast” These things are not attainable through our own works.
The first part of Galatians 5:1 says “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free…” To stand fast in something means to be rooted firmly in it. Depending on Jesus solely as the source of true freedom means we are rooted firmly in the liberty that comes from Him.
