Not Because of What You Do Part 2 of 2

Not Because of What You Do Part 2 of 2

Our good deeds don’t qualify as payment for our freedom. Hebrews 9:22 says “And according to the law almost all things are purified with the blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.” As you may know, during in the Old Testament, animals were sacrificed to cleanse one from their sin(see also Hebrews 9:12-15). When Christ died on the cross, He freed us from the law. So, the debt that was incurred by sin was then paid by the blood of Christ.

The second part of Galatians 5:1 says “and do not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage”. Once we come to depend on Christ as the sole source of our freedom, we have to resist the temptation of thinking that what we accomplish is what keeps us free. I find it interesting that the one thing we fixate on in an effort to remain free, is the very thing that actually keeps us bound. The thought that our works keep us free is the yoke that holds us from the freedom itself.

Religion and the world encourage us to put on that yoke of performance. We see it on television many times that doing our own thing is the way to get real freedom. In church we are preached messages that suggest freedom is found in what we do. I think our flesh wants to be appeased through our works. If we do certain things like pray or read our bibles for a long time then we “feel spiritual”. I learned that when we “feel” something, it is not our spiritual man talking. Our flesh is where the “feeling” is coming from.  Remember that our position in God is not based on how much we tithe, fast or pray. Yes, we should live Spirit filled lives. But, the key thing is “Spirit”.

So, look to God for true freedom. Because that is the only place we’ll find it.
