You Can’t Out-Give God
When we’ve got stuff to get rid of, one of the first things we do is call up a family member or a friend and ask them if they want it. We might make that trip to Goodwill or Salvation Army but most of the time, getting rid of things usually means tossing it out or passing it to someone we know. That’s fine and there is nothing particularly wrong with that. In fact, I think it’s natural to first call up our friends and family when cleaning out our closets and pantries. But, Jesus taught about going beyond our circle when giving to others.
Luke 14:12 says “Then He also said to him who invited Him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid.”” When someone does something nice for us, we want to return the favor and do something nice for them. So, it’s safe to say that when we do something nice for someone, they may want to return the favor and do something nice for us. Jesus was saying here to help those that can’t necessarily return the favor.
Verse 14 goes on to say, “And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” When you bless those that can’t return the favor, God will bless you. No matter how much you do for those that can’t repay, God will always be able to bless you in return. There’s no limit. So, next time you decided to give away somethings, take time to seek out those that can’t repay. Because, “you can’t out-give God”
