Get Better, Not Bitter Part 1 of 2

Get Better, Not Bitter Part 1 of 2

One thing we all must realize at some point during our Christian walk is that being a Christian is no bed of roses. God’s promise of no suffering will be fulfilled once we get to Heaven. In the meantime, we can look at the trials and tribulations of life as little boot-camp sessions. When we encounter life’s disappointments, we have two choices. We can get better by allowing God to shape and build our character; or, we can get bitter. It’s all up to us.

Both Deuteronomy 29:18 and Hebrew 12:15 talk about a root of bitterness. For something to take root, a seed must be planted. Seed’s of hurt, anger and pain can come from the disappointments in life. They can even come from our own minds. What we choose to do with those seeds determine the outcome of the fruit that is produced. For example, if we are betrayed by a close friend, choosing to not forgive her causes seeds of unforgivness to be planted into our spirits. We can feed these seeds by gossiping about the situation, or even attempting to seek our own revenge. By allowing the hurt and unforgiveness to stay in our hearts, these seeds begin to grow roots and eventually becoming roots of bitterness. The resulting bitterness may affect other relationships in our lives. We may even build a wall up and allow it to prevent us from trusting other people.
