Not Just a Hearer Part 2 of 2
I have often heard people say that God’s word is like a mirror. I never really knew what that meant until I begin to study it for myself. When we read God’s word, we are able to see what is right and what is wrong in ourselves. After seeing what needs work, we then can go to God and ask Him to change us. We would have never known there was a problem until we read the word or looked into our “spiritual mirror”. James 1:23-24 says that if we are only hearers of God’s word, we are like someone that looks at their face in the mirror and walks away and forgets what they look like. When we read God’s word or hear a teaching and fail to apply it to our own lives, we have walked away from that “spiritual mirror” and forgotten that something was out of place. We have forgotten what our spirit man looks like.
James 1:25 tells us that when we do the word and not just hear it, so many blessings come into our lives. This just makes sense. Whenever we follow the principles of God, it is natural that things will flow better in our lives. God set those principles because He wants what it best for us. It is the devil that tells us our way is the best way pr we aren’t truly free until we live by our own rules. In Matthew 7:24-26 Jesus gives a clear example of hearing and doing. He says that those that hear and do are like a wise man that builds his house on a rock. When the rains, floods and winds come, the house still stands because it has a strong foundation. Those that only hear and not do, are like that man that builds his house on the sad. When the rain, winds and floods come, his house will fall.
It is so important that we make sure our lives line up with God’s word. I love Psalm 119:9 because it is simple instructions on how to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord, “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word”. If you have found that you are one of those that have failed to apply God’s word to your life, take a moment right now to repent. Ask God to forgive you and ask Him to help you apply His word to your life. We have to actually do what God’s word tells us in order for it to work in our lives.
