Decreasing Us, Increasing Him
No matter what we are doing or what we strive to do, at the end of the day, when it’s all said and done, it’s all about Christ. This is something that we as Christians should know. However, some of us fail to actually put it to action in our lives. This is evident when we see gospel singers and ministers on stage “performing” rather than ministering. This is also evident when we see strife between two churches over membership numbers and popularity contests in the body of Christ. I believe this type of behavior saddens the heart of God.
John 3:25-30 teaches us the very important lesson that it’s all about Christ. Some of John’s disciples took notice and mentioned to John that more people were beginning to follow Jesus. Apparently the popularity thing existed back then too. John then says in verse 27, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven…” In other words, the people that originally followed John were sent by God. John recognized who was behind his “success” if you will. He finishes his statement by saying “He must increase, but I must decrease.” Notice the emphasis on the word “must”? To be successful, we have to decrease ourselves and increase God. It is a must.
It is very important that we don’t allow pride to deceive us into thinking any success we gain is with our own efforts. It is also important that we don’t get caught up in popularity contests and who has more. We as Christians are on the same team. Our main agenda should be to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ, and win souls for Him. Focusing on the popularity and being caught up in self is a trick that the enemy uses to shift our focus away from our main agenda. Ladies, let’s not allow the enemy to shift our focus away from who is more important any longer. Let’s unite as one for Lord and do what He has called us to do.
