Breaking Genrational Curses Part 1 of 2

Breaking Genrational Curses Part 1 of 2

What is a generational curse? I believe that a generational curse is a spiritual bondage that is passed from one generation to the next. When I read the 1st and 2nd books of Kings, generational curse was the first thing that came to my mind. I noticed a trend that seemed to take place during that time. One king would choose to live in sin. Then, his son would become king and choose to walk in the same sin as his father. This would continue for a few generations until one would rise up and choose to live righteously.

Lamentations 5:7 says “Our fathers sinned and are no more, but we bear their iniquities.” This told me that generational curses can start with sin. An example can be found in 1 Kings 15. During this time, Abijam reigned over Judah. 1 Kings 15:3 says that he walked in the sins of his father and his heart was not loyal to God. Rehoboam was Abijam’s father. Looking back at 1 Kings 14:22-23, we see that while Rehoboam was king, he got involved in idolatry and perversion. Going back even further, we know that Solomon, Rehoboam’s father, dabbled in idolatry as well(see 1 Kings 11). So, maybe that is where the curse started. These types of examples can be found throughout the books of Kings and Chronicles.

I believe the enemy will try to deceive us into thinking that these negative ways of life can’t be changed. Of course this is a lie. After Abijam died, Asa became king. He chose to walk righteously and follow God. He got rid of the idols, threw the perverted people out of the land and he even demoted his grandmother from being queen mother because she had made an image of an idol. Just as Asa chose to walk in righteousness, we too can make the same choice.
