Remembering The Good Part 2 of 2

Remembering The Good Part 2 of 2

Reading through the Israelite’s journey to the promised land gave me a clear picture of how we can allow our past hurts to affect our present state of mind. One example is found in their first encounter of trouble during thier escape from Egypt. They got to the Red Sea and the Egyptians were hot on their heels. In Exodus 14:11-12 they ask Moses why he didn’t leave them in Egypt. Verse 12 says “Is this not the word that we told you in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than that we should die in the wilderness.” They weren’t thinking “God brought us out of slavery so He’ll help us in this situation.”They were focused on the past and it affected their faith during that present situation.

The first part of Proverbs 23:7 says “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…” So, if I am constantly focusing on the past hurt, I will constantly be hurt. Eventually, what is in my heart will come out of my mouth (Luke 6:45b). Thus creating a domino effect. Why not turn it around, think about God’s goodness and allow praises for that goodness to come out of our mouths? This doesn’t have to be done only in bad times. If we create a habit of doing it in good times first, it won’t be hard to do in the bad times. We will already be accustomed to it. So let’s throw those pity party invitation out, and focus on God’s goodness. You’ll be glad you did :)
