Mod.s.t Fashions’ Look of The Week: Textures
Sometimes, the very fabric of a piece determines whether it’s dressy, casual or even sporty. For example, a denim maxi wouldn’t be appropriate for a black tie event. But, a chiffon or silk maxi would be. They’re both maxis but the difference is simply the fabric or the texture. The silk is soft; while the denim is more rugged. A more subtle approach to exploring textures can be done by adding small touches of texture here and there.
This season, the runways around the world saw a variety of textures. I’ve highlighted the most popular and came up with a few quick tips on how you can play with textures and get the most our of your look.
- A textured piece can add subtle personality to your look with out going overboard. With a solid colored chunky knit sweater, the design is in the knit. Little else has to be done to it.
- Snakeskin adds a touch of color to your look. Most snakeskin prints/textures are multi-colored. So, you’re not limited to one color.
- Don’t be afraid to wear texture in pieces other than accessories. Try a pair of suede pants, or even a snakeskin skirt.
- Silk is another fabulous and feminine texture. It softens denim, leather and even suede; making your look more polished.
- Jewelry can be another great way to add texture to your look. Lace bangles, denim earrings, and even fur rings…the possibilities are endless. (Note: If you’re a DIYer, pieces that you already have can be refashioned and covered with fun textured fabrics).
The look below mixes texture. It features a suede skirt and a silk blouse layered under a chunky knit sweater. Suede shoes, a python bag, and coordinating jewelry accessorize the look and finish it off. I hope these quick tips will help you modestly stay in style when playing with textures.
