Keeping Your Word Part 1 of 2
While reading the Bible, I noticed that during those times, keeping a promise was very important. It was the law (Numbers 30). When someone agreed to doing something, they did it. If they failed to do it, it was looked upon as sin. Today, it seems that keeping your word is not as important as it was back then. People say they are going to do something and never do it not even thinking twice about it. Television commercials are always telling you a product is going to perform a certain way. When you get it home, you are disappointed because it didn’t work as promised. It seems no one is concerned with integrity anymore. My husband says “If you don’t have your word, you don’t have anything.” I think that is very true. All you have is your word.
Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 warn us about making promises and not keeping them. Verse 4 says, “When you vow a vow or make a pledge to God, do not put off paying it; for God has no pleasure in fools (those who witlessly mock Him). Pay what you vow.” Paying what you vow is not just in money terms. I think it means if you say you are going to do anything at all, you should do it. God has been dealing with me on this for a while now. Most times, I say that I am going to do something, but forget to do it. There is no excuse. When I make a promise, since I know I am prone to forgetting. I make a note of it. Writing it down helps me to remember. Or, I just don’t make that promise at all. Verse 5 of this scripture tells us that it is better to not vow at all than to vow and not do it. Deuteronomy 23:22 also gives us this advice.
