Dedicated to Helping Others Part 2 of 2

We live in a self serve world. Nowadays, we don’t even need clerks at the checkout of the grocery store. We can ring ourselves up. I even once saw a commercial on TV advertising a car rental place that allows you to rent your own car without the help of an agent. With all of this “self serve” influence, we can easily be deceived into thinking the way to be happy is to focus on our selves. Too often we spend our lives in such a rush, trying to accomplish our goals and acheive what we want that we forget about others around us. There’s nothing wrong with being goal oriented and wanting to achieve our goals. But, we can’t become consumed with getting what we want.

Ephesians 6:8 says “knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord…” This tells me that what we make happen for someone else, God will make happen for us. I read a story about a woman that was depressed. So, she went to her pastor for counseling. The pastor knew the woman liked to bake. So, he instructed her to go home, bake cookies, give them away and come back the next week to see how she felt. When she didn’t show up over the next couple of weeks, the pastor asked the woman after church one Sunday why she hadn’t come to counseling. She said that she got so busy with baking and giving cookies away, she forgot about being depressed. Her giving those cookies away made the people she gave them to happy. Thus, causing her to be happy.

God’s word clearly tells us that it is better to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). God is a giver. So, If we want to take on the character of God, we too are to be givers. Everywhere Jesus went, He sought to help others. So, let’s seek to help others as well.

“Father God,

Forgive me for being selfish. Show me how I can help those around me. Help me to be a light by helping others.
