What Are You Talking About? Part 2 of 2

…continued

Some ways to avoid gossiping and ungodly conversation is to:

1. Maintain a relationship with God: He will tug your heart when you are getting ready to partake in gossip. Ask Him to help you to identify situations that could turn to gossip so you are able to see it before it happens. A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished (Proverbs 27:12).

2. Take inventory of your conversation. Ask yourself  questions like “why am I talking to this person? and ”Is this conversation beneficial? If so, how?

3.  Avoid lengthy conversations with people you feel comfortable gossiping with. If it is someone that seems to always have the ”scoop”, that is not a person you want to talk to for long periods of time. Evil communication corrupts good morals (1 Corinthians 15:33).

Self control is one of the fruits of the spirit. When we give in to gossip, we allow the conversation to overtake us. We are not exercising self control. 1 Timothy 5:13 also talks about women that are busybodies and spend time gossiping. “And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.“ Here, women were instructed to attend to the home instead of visiting and gossiping with each other. So, if you find yourself spending more time on the phone than you should, ask God to give you a hobby or something else to fill that gap of free time.

As women of God, we have to set an example for other women. We are daughters of the most high God. Indulging in gossip and being two faced is clearly not the way to conduct ourselves. Let’s stop for a moment and take inventory of our conversations. Ask God to show you if you have behaved this way. Ask God for forgiveness. Take it a step further and go to the person you talked about and ask them for their forgiveness as well. Just because the world gives women this stereotype doesn’t mean we have to show them it is true.
