Who Do You Worship? Part 1 of 2
When you hear the word “idol” what comes to mind? Little wooden statues, or anything similar right? Yes, idols can be those things, but they can also be other things that take up more attention than you give God. One of the definitions for the word idol taken from dictionary.com is “any person or thing regarded with blind admiration, adoration, or devotion”. What are you devoting yourself to? Are you devoting too much of yourself to your family? Maybe you are devoting too much time to TV (I have dealt with that one). Exodus 20:3-4 specifically talks about putting other “gods” before God. As stated before you don’t have to have a little statue and bow to it to worship other gods. In 2 Kings 23:3-27, during Josiah’s rule, Judah is caught up in idolatry. While rebuilding the house of the Lord, they found the Book of Law. After reading it, they realized that they had not been keeping God’s law. God sent a word to Huldah, a prophetess saying that Judah will be punished for idolatry. But the king and those that repented for not keeping the law would be spared. After this, the king tore down all of the alters, and destroyed everything other than God that was worshiped, ordering that Judah keep the passover as God had instructed Moses. Judah continued to walk in idolatry and God punished them. (2 Kings 24 and 25) But he allowed Josiah to live in peace because he had obtained favor from God by attempting to restore true worship to God…
