Impatient and Disobedient Part 2 of 2
Sunday, we left off talking about how impatience may cause us to act before seeking God’s counsel. I believe that sometimes, impatience can also be linked to greed. Years before I gave my life to Christ, I use to shoplift. I made the excuse that I didn’t have the money to buy the things that I was stealing. I had a paying job. So if I would’ve saved my money and was patient, I may have been able to buy the things I’d stolen.
A similar situation occurs in Joshua 7. During a previous battle, God gave the Israelites specific instructions regarding the things they could take from the fallen city and the things they had to leave behind. But, Achan, disobeyed God and took what he shouldn’t have. This can be looked at as greed. But, I believe it’s also impatience. See, all of these battles they were winning and all of the spoils they were getting were blessings from God. He was giving them the promised land. Had Achan waited and been obedient, he would’ve gotten far more than a Babylonian garment, a little gold and a little silver. Instead he and is family were stoned. When we are impatient and disobedient, we lose out on blessings. No, we won’t be stoned as Achan and his family were. But we miss out on so much more than the small thing we were disobedient for (see also Deuteronomy 28).
Patience can seem like a hard thing to have. Today’s “microwave society” doesn’t make it easy for us to exercise patience. In a post titled “It’s Already There“, I talk about how we already have the fruit of the Spirit in us we simply have to work at it so it can be seen. We know by Galatians 5:22, that patience is a fruit of the Spirit. So, we are already have patience, we simply have to exercise it. God’s timing is far better than our timing and He knows whats best and when it’s best for us. Let’s not be afraid to ask God for patience. Sure it’ll be a little uncomfortable at first but the reward will be so much better than the suffering. I’m challenging myself to seek God for patience. I invite you to do the same.
