We are at war. The war I am talking about is the war between good and evil. Ephesians 6:12 says that We do not fight with flesh and blood. The battles we face daily are not with people. They are with the enemy that uses people and circumstances to steal our joy and victory. We as Christians have been drafted into that war to fight on God’s side. However, we can’t just go into the war without armor. I like to look at Ephesians 6:14-17 as the “Check List” for the armor of God. Everything we need to fight against the enemy is listed in these scriptures.

Ephesians 6:14 says to gird our waists with truth. What exactly is truth? Isaiah 11:5 explains that truth is made up of righteousness and faithfulness and John 17:17 tells us that the word of God is truth. So the only way to live righteous and faithful to live by the word of God ( Psalms 119:9).

The next piece in the armor of God is also mentioned in Ephesians 6:14. It is the breastplate of righteousness. Righteousness is being right with God. The breast plate is the piece of armor that covers the chest. In doing so, it also covers the heart. When you have the breast plate of righteousness, your heart is right with God. Only seeking to please Him. Keeping your heart right with God requires you to guard your heart, only allowing the things of God into it ( Proverbs 4:23).

Ephesians 6:15 says on our feet should be the preparation of the gospel of peace. Having the gospel of peace of our feet means that we are walking in love being imitators of Christ (Ephesians 5:1-2). Remember those wristbands from back in the day that said WWJD (What Would Jesus Do?)? When we are imitators of Christ, we really have to ask ourselves this question in everything we do. Next, wearing peace on our feet means to walk in light. Ephesians 5:8-13 tells us exactly how to walk in light. Verse 8-9 says “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;).” So, walking in the light is also bearing the fruit if the spirit (Galatians 5:22). Finally, walking with peace is to also walk in wisdom. Ephesians 5:15-17 tells us to not be foolish and to walk in the will of God. It also tells us to redeem the time. Basically to be aware that these are the last days and they are full of evil.

The shield of faith is the next item in the armor of God. Ephesians 6:16 says that “above all” we should have it to quench the fiery darts of the enemy. Faith is belief and trust (Hebrews 11:1). Even though you can’t see it happening, you believe and trust God is doing it. Many times, the devil will throw doubt at us when we are believing God for something. I believe doubt is the fiery darts the scripture talks about. When we have faith, we can repel the doubt the enemy throws at us.

Verse 17 of Ephesians 6 says that we should put on the helmet of salvation. Some of the strongest battles are fought on the battleground of the mind. Salvation is being rescued from danger and being saved from sin and it’s punishment. Since the blood of Jesus washes our sins away, Having the helmet of salvation means that the blood of Jesus is continually cleansing our minds from thoughts of insecurity, discouragement and fear. Asking God to renew our minds also causes us to put on the helmet of salvation.

Finally, the armor of God is completed when we have our sword. Ephesians 6:17 says that the sword is the word of God. If we do not have the word of God, we cannot know how to properly wear the other items of armor. The word of God is the instruction manual to living a Godly life. In a post I wrote called “Spiritual Warfare”, I talked about how Jesus used the word of God in the wilderness to ward off the devil’s attempts to temp Him( (Matthew 4:1-11). Hebrews 4:12 say “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Just as Jesus used the word of God, we too can use it in the same manner.

My sister, we are destined for warfare and dressed for battle. But attempting to fight this battle in our own strength is giving the victory over to the enemy. The only way to fight is to allow God to fight.

Watching and praying, let’s persevere to the victorious end.
