I  love the maxi dress. But one of the problems I’ve run into while looking for for them are the neck lines. They tend to be low or none existent. This problem can be remedied by wearing a boat neck tee or tank underneath. Layering a tee under a spaghetti strap maxi dress not only makes is more modest, but can add a pop of color as well. Maxi dresses with sleeves do exist. Shopping for them just takes a little time and patience. But know that they are out there.

Here are some style tips:

• A colored jacket or blazer is one of the easiest ways to accessorize a white dress. You know that one jacket in your closet that you can’t seem to find anything to match? I’m sure it’ll look really good with your white dress. Try it out.

• A belt is a great way to break up the white. It helps to add a pop of color on an otherwise plain white dress.

• Add a flower pin or brooch for a sophisticated look

• A sash can be tied around the waist for a belt or even worn around the shoulders (for sleeveless dresses) on cool summer evenings
• Yes, scarves are worn during the summer. A printed chiffon or silk scarf can add life to your dress.

• One of my favorite ways to accessorize is with colored jewelry. It is also the easiest way to bring color to your white dress

• Sometimes, the shoes make the outfit. Play your other accessories down a bit and allow your shoes to stand out.

When shopping for a white dress, try to find a simple style. The plainer, the better. Also, short sleeves or sleeveless dresses tend to be the most versatile. As for the length, try a calf  length. That way, it’ll look good with heels or flats.

Colors:

• There are many different hues of reds and blues to wear. Wearing these colors modestly would mean to wear the warmer shades of reds and blues. For example, instead of wearing a bright royal blue, opt for the navy.
• Wear the brighter colors in your accessories and try not to wear too many accessories with the bright colors at one time. For example, in the look below, the shoes are done in red to bring out the red in the top. There are two other accessories with the red (bangle and earrings) but the larger pieces (pants and bag) tone them down with the dark denim. Since the red stripes are minimal, this keeps it modest.

Style:

• On a really hot day, you may not want to wear jeans. But, you want to be able to play with the kids, or just be comfortable at the family barbecue. Cropped jeans are the perfect alternative. If you don’t have a pair of cropped jeans, create the  look by cuffing a pair of straight leg jeans above you ankles.
• The nautical theme is a great way to wear American colors.

Midi’s come in just about any variety of fabrics, colors and prints.  They can be worn at or below the belly button or on the waist. There are dresses available in the midi length as well (as shown below).  I love the versatility this skirt length offers. It can be worn with flats or heels. I think this classic will be around for a long time…at least in my closet anyway

I love the bohemian look because it is one of the more modest styles. When putting this look together I love to wear wood jewelry. However, gold or silver can be worn as well.

Bold colors are being worn everywhere. Striking hues of  orange, green, yellow and pink are being seen on the runways and on the streets. To wear these types of colors modestly, opt to wear them in your accessories. This way, you can wear the bold colors you like but not bring attention to yourself. If you want to wear a bold color in your top or bottom, wear a neutral color to tone it down. Remember, modesty is not just about covering up. It is also about not wearing things that are too loud and showy.

Nothing says island inspired better than linen. It is my favorite summer fabric  because it is very lightweight. Although it requires frequent ironing, I’ve found it to be one of the more versatile fabrics. Most linen garments can be transitioned from day to evening with a quick change of accessories. When styling with linen be sure to pay close attention to the thickness of the garment. Some pieces can be very thin. Proper undergarments may be needed to maintain modesty.

Floral prints used to be reserved for little old ladies. However, they  are now being seen on women of all ages.  I am a “girly girl” and have always been a fan of floral prints because they are soft and feminine. The multiple colors that make up this print offers versatility when it comes to accessories. So one is not limited to just one color. The Nautical theme features items like boat shoes, horizontal stripes, sailor pants and the classic red, white and blue colors. I have found the best way to keep it modest when putting it together is to try and keep prints and stripes to minimum. As pictured below, the t-shirt is striped but, the jacket tones it down. Since there is a print in the top, everything else is done in solid colors.

I think the Nautical look is a very easy look to achieve. Most of the items are probably already in your closet. And as I mentioned earlier, they are already modest, so, you may not need to add a tank to raise a neckline, and so on.
