My husband always says that people will help you if they see you helping yourself. In other words, if the one that has what you need sees you doing the work needed to get what you are working towards, they are more apt to help than if you are just sitting around waiting for a hand out. God sort of works the same way. James 2:17says “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead”. When we ask God for something, we believe that He will provide what we have asked for. However, there is another part to it. We have to get up and work or start moving in the natural.

I’m sure God could just drop the answers to our prayers from the sky the moment we ask and believe. But if that were to happen, I don’t think we would appreciate it as much if at all. There would also be no need for this scripture telling us that work is necessary. Think about when you were a kid and you asked a parent for money. Sometimes, they would ask you to do an odd job like rake the leaves, or even clean up the house before they gave you the money. One you got it, you appreciated it more because you worked for it. When we ask God for something, there is work on our parts that has to be done. We can’t be lazy and expect it to get done for us. I believe that it shows our faith when we do the work (see James 2:18). We can say we have faith, but can we take those natural steps to show it?

Have you ever wondered why those that tell the truth or “keep it real” are often the most controversial? That is because correction doesn’t “feel” good. Hebrews 12:11 says “All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.” The whipping hurts at first. But after we wipe our tears and heed the correction, we can then see the fruit it produces later on. If you notice, those that do deliver the true uncompromising word of God are the ones people tend to listen to and respect more.

There are many scriptures in the book of Proverbs about receiving correction and wisdom. It is important that we walk in wisdom and we are able to take correction. No one wants to hear that they are in error, but we can’t always be so sensitive and be easily offended. When we run from correction, we are no different than those that seek out teachers for their itching ears because they can’t endure sound doctrine (see 2 Timothy 4:3-4)

Correction only helps us grow spiritually stronger. Without it, we would continue to walk in blind foolishness never producing spiritual fruit . As Christians, we will go through many trials that will require us to suck it up. Let’s not run from God’s correction, but rather take it as spiritual vitamins.

In the previous posts, I discussed how we should seek to speak the true word of God even if it causes us to be outcasts. It is very important that we not only strive to speak the true word of God but we should also seek the true word of God as well. This includes receiving correction. Let’s take a moment and analyze ourselves. How do we really act when we receive correction from God? Many times pride wants to reject the word and take it as criticism (Proverbs 16:2). Whether God corrects us directly, or indirectly through another person, it is important that we heed the words that are given to us (Proverbs 8:33).

I’m sure many of you remember being on the receiving end of your mother’s belt. If you remember the experience, you may also remember the words that followed those swats. “I’m doing this because I love you” As a child, you probably didn’t understand the concept of disciplining someone out of love. However, those lessons followed us all the way to adulthood. Some of us wouldn’t be the wonderful women we are today, had we not been instructed to “go get the switch”:). Proverbs 3:12 says “For whom the LORD loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.” So, just as our parents disciplined us because they love us, God also disciplines us out of love. I believe God often corrects us because He wants to bless us. He knows we won’t be able to handle the blessing in our present state. So, when He corrects us, if we obey, we will be able to get what He had in store for us.

I believe that God will sometimes test our diligence. One way we may be tested is to be prompted by God to fast and pray. The test may come at a time when our flesh wants to do something else. I am sure the Lord has prompted some of you to fast when you had plans to pig out at dinner that day. How about when you really wanted to watch your favorite show on TV, and the Lord prompted you to turn it off and pray? These are all examples of our diligence being tested. How serious are we about seeking the Lord?

Another way our diligence may be tested in when God withhold answers from us. Will we give up on asking Him for what we really want? Or, will we keep asking, seeking and knocking until God answers us? This reminds me of the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15:21-28. She came to Jesus and asked Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. Verse 23 says that Jesus didn’t answer her. The woman then began to worship Jesus in verse 25 saying “Lord, help me!” This woman was hard working and persistent in seeking Jesus for His help. The end result was her daughter being healed right then and there. Just because we don’t get an answer from God right away doesn’t mean that we should give up in seeking Him. It certainly doesn’t mean that God is not listening or doesn’t care.

I realize that I am now being tested in my diligence. I have made it up in my mind that I am not going to stop asking, seeking and knocking (see Matthew 7:7-8). Don’t stop seeking God. No matter what it is you are desiring. Don’t even be afraid that what you want is not His will. You won’t know until you ask. So keep seeking God. And be hard working and persistent with Him.

Hebrews 11:6 is one of the popular “faith” scriptures. The first part says, “But without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is…” I have always focused on the first part of the scripture. But the other day when I read it, the second part grabbed my attention, “…and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” Lately, there are some things I have been asking God for. I prayed about them, I believed that God will give them to me, but that was it. I have just been kind of going with the flow. After reading this, I realized that maybe I haven’t been diligently seeking Him for those things that I desire.

The scripture didn’t just say that the Lord rewards those who seek Him. The word diligent is there for a reason. The Encarta World English Dictionary defines diligent as “persistent and hard-working: showing persistent and hard-working effort in doing something”. This means that the Lord rewards those that are persistent and hard working in seeking Him. He doesn’t reward the casual inquirers. Only those that are serious in seeking Him. This makes sense when you put the first part of the scripture with it. I suppose that when we ask God for something, or when we seek Him and don’t find Him when we want, and give up, it shows a lack of faith.

Have you ever noticed that throughout the Old Testament, God rewarded the Israelites when they were serious about seeking Him? Many times, they would halfheartedly serve the Lord, get caught up in idolatry, and end up in terrible situations. It was only when they put away their foolishness and got serious about God would He show up and deliver them out of their trials. Much hasn’t changed with the way some of us serve God today. We go to church, read our bibles, and allow life’s issues to hinder us from having a true relationship with God. It is only when we are in a financial rut, or are going through a tough time that we really call on the Lord. We should be hard working and persistent in seeking Him no matter what is going on in our lives.

Let’s face it, no one wants to hear that they need correction. Pride wants us all to believe that we are ok. So when we share the truth, there will be people that will get upset. 2 Timothy 3:1 tells us that perilous times will come. This is warning us that speaking the truth will not be easy. But, 2 Timothy 4:5 tells us how to handle it. It says “But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry” This tells us to continue to do the will of God in ministry even if it means not being the mot popular.

One thing I can respect about my husband is that he always speaks the truth; even if it doesn’t “feel” good. I have sometimes been on the receiving end of that truth and had to swallow my pride and bandage my wounds . I know that he speaks the truth in love and it will make me a better person. He is an inspiration to me to not seek to people please. Ladies, sometimes speaking the true word of God will cause us to lose the popularity contest. God’s word warns us that these times will come. But, we must endure knowing that we are pleasing the One whose opinion matters the most.

We live in a day where people want to be wooed with words. In other words, they want a watered down message, or a “feel good” message. 2 Timothy 4:3-5 talks about this. Verse 3 says “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers” Truth doesn’t always feel good. This scripture is telling us that there are people that will seek out someone to tell them what they want to hear. They will avoid hearing what they need to hear. But, if we seek to do God’s will, we should speak the truth. No matter how unpopular it causes us to be.

When we don’t give the truth straight up, we may take the edge off by using other words for sin, such as “issues” or “slip”. We may avoid messages of deliverance and stick to the ones that don’t sting. Watering down the truth is in essence people pleasing. If we seek to please people, we then put their desires over God’s. 2 Timothy 4:4 says “and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” This is warning us up front that the truth will be unpopular, but the desire to do God’s will should exceed the desire to win the popularity contest.

Jesus said in John 8:32 “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” If the truth is what makes us free, withholding the truth is like withholding the keys to freedom. Thus causing one to remain bound. Others may lead us to believe that just because we share a truth that doesn’t necessarily “feel” good, we are not walking in love. However, if we are walking in love, why would we want anyone to remain bound in sin? Sin brings death and destruction.

"Someone has said that when God calls anyone to do His work, you can hardly get him in the pulpit; but when the devil calls him, you can't keep him out of it." ~Maria Woodworth-Etter
Are Your Prepared?

The second part of 2 Timothy 4:2 says “…be ready in season and out of season…” The opportunity to minister to someone can come at any time or in any place. For a while when I heard of ministry, I automatically thought of the pulpit. But, as I learned more about God and became a real Christian, I came to the realization that one doesn’t need to have a congregation to minister. Our jobs can be our ministries,we can even minister to someone in the line at the grocery store or the bank. This is why the scripture emphasizes being ready at all times. We may be somewhere and not have a Bible handy to pull out and flip to a scripture. This is why it is important that we have the word of God in our hearts.

The final part of 2 Timothy 4:2 tells us how to minister the gospel, “ …Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all long-suffering and teaching.” Yes, we are to bring correction to error according to God’s word. But there is a way to do things. The scripture says with all long-suffering and teaching. We are to minister the gospel with love and patience. Jesus is the best example to follow when we need to know how to minister to others. When it came to sinners, He ministered in love. But, Jesus also came down very hard on those that knew the truth and chose not to walk in it. Think about the way He handled the Samaritan woman versus the way He dealt with the Pharisees and the people He threw out of the temple. There was a big difference.

It is vital that we are thoroughly prepared for whatever comes our way in day to day life. Yes, it can be easy to piggyback off of the Bible knowledge of others. But, when it all boils down to it, we must know God’s word for ourselves. Let’s buckle down and dig into the word of God. Let’s get prepared.

Whenever we set out to complete a task, no matter what it is, we prepare for it. If we are having family and friends over for dinner, we prepare the food and make sure everything that is needed for the gathering is present. In Mark 16:14-18, Jesus told us to go to all the world and preach the gospel. But, for us to effectively minister the gospel, we have to be prepared by knowing the word of God. We can’t teach someone something we don’t know anything about ourselves. Timothy 4:2 tells us how to minister to others. It even tells us how to be prepared.

The first part of the scripture says “Preach the word!…” The fact that there is an exclamation mark at the end of the sentence tells me that it is VERY important that we preach the word of God and only that. As mentioned before, we can’t preach something that we don’t know. When I first gave my life to the Lord, I learned a lot of scriptures from listening to my husband. I had never really taken the time to learn God’s word for myself. Once I started to read and dig into it on my own, it seemed as though things became more clear to me. I began to get a better understanding of God. It even made it easier to have a conversation with my husband about God and His word. It can be easy to become complacent with just knowing the popular scriptures, and memorizing what we hear someone else saying. But, we have to know what God is saying in His word for ourselves. Not just for the purpose of ministry, but for our own personal spiritual growth as well (see 2 Timothy 2:15).
